Sigsig class reading
The From Words to Wings mobile library is divided up in book collections which we loan to participating schools.

What does a From Words to Wings book collection look like?

Each collection consists of 60 books targeted at children Kindergarten through 3rd grade. We intentionally include a variety of topics, genres and reading levels. Some books are perfect for reading aloud to the class while others are best used by students to explore on their own.

Each participating school receives one book collection on loan per month. The books are divided among the participating classrooms to create a classroom library. In a small rural school with combined classrooms that means that both the K/1st and the 2nd/3rd grade classrooms receive 30 books each. In comparison to classrooms in the United States, that might seem like a very small number, but these are schools that generally own only a few books of their own, so 30 new books a month is a true treasure trove!

Over the course of the year, each collection rotates through all of the participating schools. In this way, we can provide as many different books as possible to the students. By the end of the school year, each school will have borrowed 480 books!

We currently have 8 collections which include a combination of books in Spanish, bilingual books, wordless books and picture books in English. All of the books in our collections are the result of generous donations from donors in the United States.

Future plans….

We hope that through future donations, each collection can be expanded to include at least 60 books in Spanish, supplemented with additional picture books in English. We would especially like to add new titles written by South American authors.
