From Words to Wings is a library and literacy program serving children in Latin America.
Our goal is for every child to become a confident reader and develop a lifelong love of reading. To reach this goal, we have developed four components to our program:
1. Classroom activities including storytime and read alouds
2. Teacher training
3. Mobile library
4. Support for the development of permanent school libraries
How does the program work?
Schools apply to participate in From Words To Wings by submitting an application, scheduling a school visit and a meeting with the principal for From Words to Wings staff. We give priority to rural public schools with limited access to books that serve low income children. Once a school has been selected to participate, they receive an orientation and then during the school year, each participating school receives monthly From Words to Wings visits.
The monthly visit consists of classroom activities for each participating classroom, a new book collection on loan for classroom use and a mini-teacher training. Periodically, we offer in depth teacher trainings on topics related to early literacy. Throughout the year, we also work with the school staff on a plan to create a permanent school library.
We currently serve 4 schools in and around, Cuenca, Ecuador. With the support of future donations, we can increase the number of schools participating in our program.
